FOUR PAWS back in Petra with a donation from the Robert Cave Memorial Fund

2016-12-13

At the beginning of October, FOUR PAWS returned to Petra alongside the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA) and the Princess Alia Foundation (PAF)  to look after the working horses at the UNESCO world heritage site.  Due to a generous donation from the Robert Cave Memorial Fund, we were able to acquire 140 dewormers, 10 harnesses for carriages and 75 neoprene girth covers.

Again a FOUR PAWS team was on site to help the horses and donkeys in Petra (Jordan).

Vets on site

During the trip, FOUR  PAWS administered the deworming medicine to the horses as well as the fitting some of the horses with harnesses and girth covers. Several horses were treated by our vet Iulia Melega for minor injuries. Bridget Hancock and Matt Pinney, who were invited by our partner the Princess Alia Foundation (PAF), did a great job in conveying their expert knowledge of stable and horse management and farriery respectively. After holding a farriery workshop earlier this year, Matt returned again to emphasise the importance of good farriery and taught many of the horse owners how to correctly shoe their own horses.

Working for Petra's horses since 2015

In 2015 we started a collaboration with PDTRA and PAF. Since then our collaboration has already achieved substantial changes such as building new stables and building a water diversion system for “flash flood” waters which cause a great deal of damage to the site and pose a risk for the horses and horse owners on site.

In addition to the newly implemented law to regulate the working conditions for the horses in the Petra park, the numerous visits and treatments by external vets and horse experts have already improved the lives and care of the working horses in Petra. Nevertheless, we are all aware that a lot of work lies ahead of us, and we are confident that through our partnership and dedication we will improve the health and working conditions of the working horses in the beautiful Rose Red City of Petra in Jordan.
