27.4.2021

Cats that are used to outdoor access, also need this freedom in winter. But the forays into ice and snow can be dangerous for cats. Early darkness, fog and cold endanger the animals and cat owners should be prepared.

Cats that are active outdoors in winter must be given increased amounts of food in order to have sufficient energy available. It is advisable to increase the amount as soon as winter sets in. The weight should still be checked regularly. The animal is allowed to gain a bit of weight, but not become fat.

A warm place outdoors

As the temperature drops, the fur gradually becomes thicker, and cats can cope better with the cold. But to protect the cats even more, it is advisable to offer shelter outside. This can be a place with blankets in the shed or in the garage. The walls should be insulated with cardboard or cork so that the room stays warm and is windproof. The space should also be set up a little elevated so that the cold from the floor does not affect the cats.

Preventing from dangers

Fog and early nightfall pose a great danger to strolling cats because they can be overlooked by drivers when crossing the street. Even though a reflective cat collar can help it can also be dangerous as it can injure if the cat can get caught on fences and bushes. In the worst case, it cannot free itself from such a situation. Every owner has to carefully weigh the advantages and disadvantages here. Another source of danger is standing water. Anyone who has a garden pond should cover it. This will prevent the cat from breaking in on a thin sheet of ice.

Cat flap is a great option

The installation of a cat flap is recommended for unhindered entry and exit. Cats actually prefer to be warm in winter and like to stay indoors. Even so, an outdoor cat will want to leave her home every now and then.
