Real Fur Sold as 'Faux': Investigations Exposed in Australia
FOUR PAWS investigations in Victoria and NSW uncovered real fur mislabelled as faux, deceiving Australian consumers. Items like jackets, scarves, and toys were found to contain raccoon dog, rabbit, and even domestic cat fur, despite labels claiming synthetic materials. Forensic testing revealed deliberate mislabelling and lack of transparency in fur supply chains. Products were either unlabelled or falsely declared, with vendors providing inaccurate information. This deceptive practice highlights the urgent need for mandatory labelling and testing standards. FOUR PAWS continues to call for legislative reform to protect consumers and animals from the cruelty hidden behind misleading fur products.
Australia Is Importing Animal Cruelty by Allowing Fur Sales
Australia imports tens of thousands of fur items annually, mostly from China and Europe, including trims on coats and accessories. Despite a ban on cat and dog fur, poor enforcement allows these products to enter the market. Fur farming involves extreme cruelty—animals like mink and foxes are confined to tiny cages, suffering stress, injuries, and behavioural disorders before being killed by gassing or electrocution. With no national laws regulating fur sales, Australia is complicit in global animal suffering. FOUR PAWS urges bans in NSW and Victoria and national action to end fur imports and align with ethical global standards.
